6x4 vs 8x4 Dump Trucks: A Buyer's Guide

Choose between a 6x4 and an 8x4 dump truck by checking the load, route and actual vehicle specifications together. An 8x4 has an additional axle, but that alone does not prove a higher legal payload, better traction or lower cost per trip. 1. What do 6x4 and 8x4 mean?
In the usual wheel-configuration notation, a 6x4 truck has three axles with two driven axles, while an 8x4 has four axles with two driven axles. The notation describes wheel positions rather than counting every individual tire in a dual-wheel assembly. Scania's wheel-configuration reference distinguishes these three- and four-axle layouts.
Both configurations therefore normally have two driven axles. Do not assume that the extra axle on an 8x4 makes it four-axle drive. Confirm the steering layout, driven axles, suspension and any lift-axle equipment on the offered unit; a generic model name does not describe every chassis variant.
2. Separate payload from the size of the dump body
Body volume is measured in cubic metres; payload is a mass. A large body filled with a dense material may reach a weight limit before it is full. Ask for internal body dimensions, how the quoted volume is measured and the expected loose bulk density of the material. Use material mass = loaded volume × bulk density as an initial planning calculation, not as permission to load the truck.
Compare the confirmed permitted loaded mass with the measured ready-to-work empty mass, including the body, fuel, equipment and other operating items. Then have the responsible fleet or body specialist check axle distribution and every relevant chassis, axle, tire, body and route limit. The allowable load is not simply a brochure's maximum minus a guessed empty weight. Destination road and registration limits must be verified locally.

3. Compare the whole route, not only the quarry gate
Map the loading point, access roads, public-road sections, gradients, corners, bridges and unloading area. Record the narrowest access and the space needed to turn and reverse. A shorter vehicle can be useful on restricted sites, but actual wheelbase, steering geometry and body overhang determine access; the 6x4 or 8x4 badge alone cannot settle it.
For soft ground and slopes, compare the specified driveline, axle ratio, tires and condition rather than the number of axles alone. Volvo's axle-selection guidance starts with the vehicle's mission, weight and topography. For an overseas purchase, send route photos and working conditions to the supplier and your local fleet specialist before accepting a configuration recommendation.
4. Inspect the equipment that actually carries and unloads the material
Request current evidence for the chassis, subframe, suspension mounts, body floor, tailgate, hinges and hydraulic equipment, in addition to the engine, gearbox, brakes and tires. Ask the inspector to record cracks, corrosion, deformation, leaks and signs of past repair, and to distinguish findings from repairs merely proposed in the quotation.
Have qualified personnel perform body and hydraulic tests under the manufacturer's procedures. Do not enter the tipping area or inspect beneath a raised body informally. Require a professional report and resolve safety-critical findings before operation.
5. Compare cost per completed job with the same assumptions
An 8x4 may be worth considering when its verified load allowance fits the material and route and reduces the required number of trips. A 6x4 may be suitable when access, the required load or available maintenance support makes the smaller configuration a better fit. Neither is automatically the economical choice.
Build a comparison using the same route and working hours: allowed material per trip, realistic cycle time, fuel, tires, routine maintenance, driver time and expected downtime. Use measured fleet information or written, unit-specific estimates. Do not carry a seller's claimed fuel savings or payload from a different model into your purchasing calculation.
6. Send a requirement that produces a comparable quotation
For a China-sourced used dump truck, provide the material, intended load, route, site access, daily working pattern, destination and acceptable condition range. Ask each supplier to return the same specification and inspection fields. This makes the response useful even when the proposed brands or model years differ.
Keep the 6x4 and 8x4 options open until the evidence identifies the better match. Before purchase, connect the chosen configuration, current-unit inspection, agreed repairs, shipping dimensions and buyer-confirmed destination requirements in one file.
